STUDY OF PHYSICOCHEMICAL PROFILE OF GAUTAM KUND, CHANDARABANI-DEHRADUN
Gautam Kund Chandarabani is a one of the oldest pilgrimage of Uttarakhand. People have great credence in this utmost religious place since during Satyuga, Gods had gathered had conference for establishment of Rain God Indra and besides it The Great saint Rishi Gautam along with his wife Ahilya and daughter Anjanee had done spiritual meditation for 12 years at this very land of and Holy river Ganga appeared being delighted their at spiritual meditation. Now the Pilgrimage center is known as “Gautam Kund”. Here The Ganga river flows from the east to the west and further it merges into the Yamuna another Holy river of Hindus.
There is a legand that when Saint Gautam came to Chandrabani, there was dearth of water here. Being thirsty one night Ahilya asked Saint Gautam for water, he dug a ditch himself and a stream flowing then people living around begun started using this water for daily needs. Every year huge and magnificent fair is organized here on Baisakhi (14 April). Devottee have special bath and worship on various other auspicious occasion such as Suyragrahan, Chandragrahan, Jyeshthmasa (March) and Kartikamasa (August).
A demonstration visit of physic chemical profile which includes physicochemical parameters, phytoplankton and chlorophyll estimation by Zoology Department was taken to “Gautam Kund” on 9 February, 2017 as per the need of their syllabus and dissertation work of Ms. Monika Pandey. It was attended by the students of M.Sc. Zoology IV semester. A total of about 02 students were present in this tour.The tour was important due to fact that the any information of the “Gautam Kund” on the ecological point of is grossly lacking. Moreover, the water of the Kund is also being used by the local people for domestic purpose.
In the preliminary studies physicochemical parameters like water temperature ranged between 18.0 OC to 22.0 OC, dissolved oxygen fluctuated between 4.6 mg/l and 7.4 mg/l, the value of free carbon dioxide fluctuated between 1.1 mg/l and 2.86 mg/l. Total alkalinity was observed 9.0 mg/l – 35.0 mg/l. The pH of the water was alkaline and it ranged in between 7.0 to 7.8. Turbidity of water ranged between 0.4 and 1.0 NTU, while, TDS was ranged in between 0.338 ppt – 0.681 ppt. The common phytoplanktons observed are Epithemia, Synedra, Navicula, Diatoma, Spyrogira, Closterium, Microspora etc.
